IES Releases Education Research Grants

The Institute of Education Services (IES) announces the upcoming release of education research grants. Three of these (Teacher Quality -- Reading/Writing; Teacher Quality -- Math/Science; English Language Learners) are posted on the Teacher Education Funding Opportunities webpage. Additional areas of focus include Reading & Writing, Education Policy, Early Learning Programs, and Education Technology.

The Institute of Education Sciences (IES) has announced the upcoming release of numerous grants focusing on research in special education. Three of these (Teacher Quality, Related Services, and Autism Spectrum Disorders) have been posted to the Special Education Funding Opportunities webpage. Additional areas of focus include Early Intervention, Language Development, Cognition and Learning, and Transition.

IES Postsecondary Education Research

The Institute of Education Science (IES) intends for the Postsecondary Education research program to address five goals: (1) exploring malleable factors (e.g., programs, practices, policies) that are associated with improving access to, persistence in, or completion of postsecondary education, as well as mediators and moderators of the relations between these factors and student outcomes, for the purpose of identifying potential targets of intervention; (2) developing innovative programs, practices, or policies that are intended to improve access to, persistence in, or completion of postsecondary education; (3) evaluating the efficacy of programs, practices, or policies that are intended to improve access to, persistence in, or completion of postsecondary education; (4) providing evidence on the effectiveness of programs, practices, or policies for improving access to, persistence in, or completion of postsecondary education when they are implemented at scale; and (5) developing and/or validating assessments of cognitive (e.g., problem-solving, writing) and social cognitive (e.g., communication and interpersonal) skills that are outcomes of postsecondary education.

The long-term outcome of this program will be an array of tools and strategies (e.g., assessments, programs, policies) that have been documented to be effective for improving access to, persistence in, or completion of postsecondary education.

Amount: $100,000 - $1.2m (3 years)

Early-Career STEM Summer Leadership Institute

Project Kaleidoscope is seeking early-career STEM faculty engaged with transforming undergraduate STEM education in their classrooms and departments to apply for the 2010 PKAL Summer Leadership Institute. The 2010 Summer Leadership Institute is designed to enhance the leadership capacity and ability for early career faculty to act as agents of change within their home institutions or professional societies to reform STEM education.

Institute participants will have opportunity to:

  • engage in discussions about national, regional and local challenges and opportunities facing faculty engaged in improving STEM education
  • learn from experience how to deal with the political dimensions of change: how to influence, negotiate and communicate, as well as the importance of understanding the institutional culture as well as the changing context for leadership
  • reflect privately and with mentors and peers on the personal responsibilities of being an agent-of-change, and on one’s potential for leadership, to make a lasting difference for the communities of which you are a part.

The Summer Institute will be held July 17 – 22, 2010 in the heart of the Rocky Mountains at the Baca Campus of Colorado College in Crestone, Colorado.

Technology & Media Services for Individuals with Disabilities

Technology and Media Services for Individuals with Disabilities grants posted on Special Education Funding Opportunities webpage and Teacher Education Funding Opportunities webpage. Phase 1 projects must develop, refine, and test the feasibility of specific technology-based approaches.
